The problem with LJ: We all think we are so close, but some of us don't know much about one another. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Bonus points if you share a little known fact about yourself to me also!

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

Leopard Print Pillows. Each sofa came with two leopard print pillows. In the store, there were no pillows on them. I do recall a leopard print something in that general area, but no pillows. Aren't me and Tom the most unleopard pring people you've ever met? :P

Today I quit my job, then I put in my two weeks notice.

My job invloves a task list that I am supposed to complete within a certain amount of time. I close food ave at 8, and then I have until 9 to finish my tasks (not that they care if I stay later than that, but I do care). Apparently there are lots of people who have attitude problems in this town. So while I am elbow deep in dishes at work, around 8:20 or so, this black woman shouts through the open door "Can I Buy Some Popcorn?", to which I reply, I'm sorry, we're closed back here, and she shouts something back like "Well, what time do you close." and I tell her 8, all the while still doing my best to scrub dishes. She shouts about how the popcorn is all ready, and it wouldn't take much time to get it for her, and I inform her that I have a lot of cleaning to do, and I have to do it all before I can go home. I tell her I'm sorry, and that I'm closed. She then says, let me get your manager. And I keep scrubbing. The manager comes, (the manager who hasn't given me a break my entire shift) and after I tell him he can get it for her, he says, "No, you're going to get this woman two bags of popcorn and give them to her for free" and I say Ok. I get the popcorn for her, I appologize for my rude behavor (of my own volition), and I tell him "I quit. I'll finish my tasks tonight, but I won't come in tomorrow." He gives me this bull shit, feel good, nonsense about how it'd be a shame to lose me, and give it 20 minutes and let him know if I change my mind, and how he wouldn't say the same to any other team member. So I finish my tasks, and there is no way 8.50 an hour is worth so much bull shit (and there has been a lot of bullshit from this store), so I decided to give it two weeks, after all, I still want to get time and a half on monday... I told him my decision at the end of the night. I'm sorry if I think my time is worth more than two bags of popcorn to a black woman.

I spent last week at Pennsic, and I can't wait to go back with more money. :P I spent a lot of time going to classes, including: Exploration of Norse Storytelling, Cheap and Dirty Tricks for teh Beginning Harper, and Pewtercasting With Soapstone. I also watched some of the bridge battles and one of the field battles. I wanted to buy a harp and comfortable shoes but didn't because they were expensive. I also had a lot of fun camping with Meduseld. Angus was my drinking buddy, which meant I had a lot of rum in a short amount of time. I was having Woodchuck Raspberry chasers, and it was great. And then I decided I needed to lay down... on the grass... in the dark... and then I was put to bed. And then I got up to pee and everyone awake exclaimed that I was now sober enough to start again. I said no and went back to sleep. The next day I had to squash rumors that I had puked up half the rum I drank, but I didn't. And I woke up without a hangover. Everybody took good care of me all throughout the week, and I can't wait to hang out with them all again.

It was great to have a week with Tom where he wasn't stressed out about work and such. I loved that I could go visit him between his battles and my classes. The sweetest thing was his 500 times saying "I'm so glad you're here." (Well, he still owes me about 490 more times, but he said he'd get around to them.) We were both really happy that I enjoyed myself and going to classes. He was worried that I would just hang out at camp all day every day and be really bored. I was worried that it'd turn out like my first event, which didn't go so well for me. But I had a wonderful time, and I can't wait for next Pennsic. Both of us wanted another two days, but I had to leave so I could go to work today. Maybe next year, we can arrive the first Thursday of Pennsic and leave on the last Sunday. And maybe next year, I can afford a harp. :P

I finished teaching my last batch of classes yesterday, so I'm officially DONE! All that remains is 4 days of doing China things, cleaning, and packing, then my personal odessey of plane travel. Believe me, I had a time in China, and there's parts I'll miss, but not so much as I've missed Tom and Turkey and all the friends this year. It's such a relief to be going home soon, and I'll be back to China someday.

Just so everyone is clear, since people got bits and pieces of Tom's and my drama over the course of the year, we're doing fine and eager to see eachother once more. When I get off the plane, he's gonna be there with my parents. On the 20th, we're attending my best friends wedding (no, not the movie). Then we're packing my stuff and I'm moving to DC with Tom, where I hope my cat welcomes me instead of being scared shittless like he usually is. I'm looking forward to lots of kisses and snuggles. I haven't had any in China.

When I get to DC, I'll be job hunting, and in the Fall, I start distance classes for my MBA at University of Colorado. I hope it's worth it. I don't fancy myself a career woman, but it'd up my chances of employment. In the next 5 years while I work toward that degree, I also want to spend a semester at a Chinese university for language study, and 3 months doing an internship in Beijing. Definately not back to back. I couldn't stand another almost full year away. But still, it's something I'd like to do.

Help with Statement round 2

So here it is again, with revisions from Dad, Tom and April and additions from me. HALP?

Statement of Interest: A formal statement indicating why the applicant is interested in pursuing an MBA (i.e., career enhancement, improve knowledge in a certain area, etc.). There are no length requirements.

The world is a big place, but every year, we get closer to our neighbors through business relations. I lived in China this past year teaching English, and I saw how big a role diversity plays in the business world. I witnessed first hand the importance of overcoming cultural differences to achieve a common goal. I want to become a part of this process of globalization.

This past year, I taught English to primary and middle school students in China. Owing to severe over-crowding in the classrooms and relative poverty, it was extremely difficult and the rewards were hard gained. Even the teachers at this particular school in Shenzhen who are fluent in Chinese and teach English told me that teaching at Qianhai School is tough, but the challenge of teaching here has taught me the value of perseverance. It has also helped me to find out that while I enjoyed teaching, it is not a career that I feel I can excel at. Experience I have gained from teaching such as planning out my lessons, developing creative ways of presenting material, working as part of a team, and measuring the results of my work are all something that I not only feel comfortable with, but are skills I want to develop further. Because of this, I think I will be well suited to business planning and management, but I would benefit greatly from formal training. That is why I am exploring earning an MBA.

My East Asian Studies degree does not offer many opportunities for employment on its own; however, combined with a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado, my education will give me a competitive edge and make me a valuable asset to any future employers wanting to do business in China. My undergraduate degree has given me a respect of foreign cultures, especially Chinese culture. China is an economic titan, and being able to do business with China will allow a business to reap great rewards. With a Masters of Business Administration, Chinese language skills, and an understanding of Chinese culture, I want to help American companies take advantage of China’s development.

In high school, I excelled at mathematics, so I attempted university level calculus. I did not achieve as high a level of comprehension in calculus as I would have liked, but that allowed me to reevaluate my goals for college. Now, I can say that my skills in mathematics were good while in use, so I will quickly regain my aptitude during business classes.

I want to obtain my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Colorado. The University upholds a standard of quality that is very important to me when choosing a degree program. Reading the Student Vignettes excites me for the opportunity to be tied to such wonderful people through our common goal of excellence. In the Faculty Vignettes, each one of the featured professors exudes an enthusiasm for teaching that I feel will propel me to my highest achievement. I can see in the Alumni Vignettes that graduates of the program have great opportunities in the business world. I hope to one day be a part of that alumni and that business community.

I keep a notebook with me at all times, since I never know when I'm going to have a stroke of genius for a lesson plan, or if I wanna make a list of something, or write down a quote of something I or somebody funny said. I've been carrying around a small(ish) orange notebook for all of this semester and part of last semester, and while teaching my lesson on the circus today, I found a message. "I'm sorry, I just don't love the pussy. Drink to that, bitch!" ... I looked at it twice, and since I was in the middle of teaching, I tried to put it out of my mind, rather than spend the rest of class wondering WTF???

After that class let out, I looked it up again. Second to last page, right at the top. The rest of the page is blank, the other side of the paper has a phone number and some characters for bus stops I had written down. I don't know how I could have not seen this sooner, unless it's a recent addition. Also, I can't decide the handwriting. Did I write that in my sleep??? I wonder. It's reminiscent of my handwriting, but different enough to confuse me. I teach another class, and keep it out of my mind again.

I sneak a peak at the message right after class. I wanna hide it, even though none of the students, and probably none of the teachers, will know the meaning of the message. I start to wonder who I've had a spoken exchange with that might lead to a secret message from them in this vein. Mystified, I examine the script again. When I reach my room, a question, then a pang of recognition hits me. Why are there quotation marks around it? I wrote this...on the bus, that's why it's not my usual handwriting...I must have said this, who else would have?...maybe Sara....

So, I guess I wrote this weeks ago, and deliberately forgot about it to make my today a little bit better.

:edit: So, actually, I didn't write it. I just said it. Apparently when I was drunk and Kris was saying girls are better kissers than guys, but I said it needs cock to be a decent kiss. Which brought out that comment. It was Sara who wrote it down for me, because I was too drunk and shouted at her to write it. :P

Christmas in China

So my school moved my Friday classes to Wednesday, then Wednesday evening, I went to the CTLC Christmas Eve party. We played Monopoly pre dinner, and after dinner we finished the game. Dinner was tasty, and the performances were silly (maybe closer to the Chinese translation of silly which means stupid). After dinner and performaces and finishing Monopoly, I was bored, so I went up to my hotel room to read, but that was boring too, so I went to the beer party room one floor down. My friend Winston was drunk, sitting on a bed, so I sat down and he asked why I wasn't drinking and said that I should be drinking, and gave me the rest of his beer and went off to find another one of his own. So I went into the hallway to hang out with Kyle and Rachel, then I went down to the lobby and played UNO and never have I ever, and then Serena said she wanted street food, so I went with her and a bunch of other people. Kate was pretty drunk already, and she got another beer at the street food place. Street food is food on sticks that's been bbq'ed, effin delicious. So Kate is yelling "merry christmas" in chinese at every chinese person who passes by, until some guy was really happy about it, and have her a new years party pack: two kazoos, a party mask, and a ring with bells on it like a tamborine. Then she just pointed at chinese people and blew her kazoos at them. Eventually, after Barrett took and threw one kazoo into the street, she said "I'm gonna make new friends" and left our table to sit with a group of chinese people. We migrated with her, and the chinese people bought us more beer and baijiu (supposidly the most vile alcohol ever; nobody FUCKS YOU UP like baijiu). There was ganbei-ing (bottom's up!) and we hung out with them until the baijiu came out Kate's new friend's nose. Then we decided to go back to the hotel. Nobody was up and about when we got back except Winston, who was quite smashed and hitting on me. And then he wanted to walk me to my room, and barred my door, and asked for a kiss, and I was like "VERY NO! I have a boy I love and you ain't him." and he backed off, and I went to bed.

Christmas day, we had free breakfast. Then Nicole and I went to her place, dropped off our stuff, and went shopping in Dongmen (cheap stuff, cheap prices) and I got a bag and mahjong tiles. Dinner was Turkish food with James, Nicole, and Kyle. Then we played mahjong and went home.

Friday was my school's 5th year Anniversary party. Weird. Then I went to dinner with the teachers, and after two glasses of liquid courage, I mean wine, they made me sing a song in Chinese. I got the most and loudest claps and cheers. Then I ducked out early to play Munchkin with James, Amy, Sara, and Nicole while we watched Dressed to Kill.

Saturday dinner was all you can eat all you can drink delicious Japanese food. :) Teh Sweet!

I have to add another thing that made me laugh today. One class has broken speakers, so I couldn't show the Grinch to them. So we played the question game, to keep me from losing my voice to the sick (which happened anyway). The question game goes, Team 1 Student asks a question, if I say Yes, they get 2 points. If I say No, they get 1. Team 2 Student asks a question, same deal. After a few questions, the point vaules change to 1 point for Yes, 3 for No. And then instead of them asking me questions all class, I had kids come up to answer and give the points. And one kid eventually realized that when the other team asks "Are you a Girl", No being 5 points, if he lies and says he's a girl he doesn't have to give points to the other team. :P And then another team asked a chunky kid if he's fat when No would give them 5 points. And he said no, rather than admit to fattness. Oh, and them asking "Do you like [incert name of classmate of the opposite gender]". Okay, now that you get the idea, one kid points a the boy up front and says "are you my father and [pointing at me] she my mother?" I lol'ed so hard. Holy crap!

So when I was done today, I went dvd player hunting, and came back instead with speakers to take to class if need be.

I spent the whole day at the Shenzhen Library today. I ping-ponged between studying Chinese and reading Storm of Swords. HUGE LIBRARY IS HUGE! with big windows, like half the building is one big window. It was colder in the library than it was outside, so I left to take a walk for a bit and got lunch and went back for round 2 of studying. After a few more hours, I went for dinner and came back here. It was a nice way to spend a day. It felt good to be in a big place with lots of people, but everyone being quiet. It was also nice to leave my room but only go to one place and spend the day there, instead of jumping bus to bus, destination to destination.

I realize now that I can't get a high enough on the Chinese version of TEOFL to go to Chinese grad school. Meh. Seems my best bet is going to University of Maryland as non-degree and taking their Chinese classes until I move to Seattle or it's sure that I'm not moving to Seattle, at which point I'll try to get the Chinese degree. Then I can take the Praxis exam and Education classes somewheres and maybe some day I'll get a job.

From January 17th (maybe give a week) to Febuary 6th (maybe plus or minus a week) I have the New Years holiday. My friends here want to go to the Philippines to get certified to scuba. I think I won't be joining them on that adventure so that I will get to go to Beijing and visit the Great Wall and all the other famous sites that I have to visit, or I can't say I've been here. :P
