9:42 pm - I couldn't pass up on this.
The rules are that for 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day.

Today my contact teacher said "You are so clever. I would marry you well!"

4:50 pm - Movie Meme
SUPPOSEDLY if you've seen over 85 films, you have no life. Mark the ones you've seen. There are 238 films on this list. Copy this list, go to your own facebook account, paste this as a note. Then, put x's next to the films you've seen, add them up, change the header adding your number, and click post at the bottom. Have fun.

8:02 am
I spent the whole day at the Shenzhen Library today. I ping-ponged between studying Chinese and reading Storm of Swords. HUGE LIBRARY IS HUGE! with big windows, like half the building is one big window. It was colder in the library than it was outside, so I left to take a walk for a bit and got lunch and went back for round 2 of studying. After a few more hours, I went for dinner and came back here. It was a nice way to spend a day. It felt good to be in a big place with lots of people, but everyone being quiet. It was also nice to leave my room but only go to one place and spend the day there, instead of jumping bus to bus, destination to destination.

I realize now that I can't get a high enough on the Chinese version of TEOFL to go to Chinese grad school. Meh. Seems my best bet is going to University of Maryland as non-degree and taking their Chinese classes until I move to Seattle or it's sure that I'm not moving to Seattle, at which point I'll try to get the Chinese degree. Then I can take the Praxis exam and Education classes somewheres and maybe some day I'll get a job.

From January 17th (maybe give a week) to Febuary 6th (maybe plus or minus a week) I have the New Years holiday. My friends here want to go to the Philippines to get certified to scuba. I think I won't be joining them on that adventure so that I will get to go to Beijing and visit the Great Wall and all the other famous sites that I have to visit, or I can't say I've been here. :P

Dear Drea,
I don't really know how to tell you this. Your nostrils are insulting. I think I realized it when you smacked my ass in your bathtub and I saw you drive over the elephant in the corner. I'm sure you're open enough to understand that you need a sex-change. I'm returning your toe ring to you, but I'll keep your left ear as a memory. You should also know that I am better off without you and I will haunt you when I’m reincarnated as an Eskimo.

Greetings to your frog Leonard.
Jeannette

10:23 am - Okay. I'll bite.
Carrie was internet poking me to make sure I did this.

Post your name and I will do each of the following.

1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll tell you which song or movie you remind me of.
3. I'll pick a flavor of jello to wrestle you in.
4. I'll say something that only makes sense to you and me.
(if possible. If not, I'll say something that only makes sense to me.)
5. I'll tell you my first memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something I've always wondered about you.
8. I'll tell you my favorite thing about you.
9. I'll tell you my least favorite thing about you.
10. If you play, you MUST post this on yours

8:13 pm - Time Marches On
I've been really busy in China. It seems like it was just Halloween a week ago and yet here we are at December's doorstep. Today is my 100th day in China.

And I'm sad.

I've been searching for practical reasons to go back to the States and stay there. Everywhere I look turns up dead ends, while if I look for reasons to stay in China or to come back here after Heather's wedding, there are abundant opportunities.

Wherever I look, no matter how hard, I come up with two options. Go home, marry Tom, and forget I ever wanted a meaningful career. Or, come back to china, spend some years here, get a degree in TCFL and return to America with the hope of a job teaching Chinese somewhere.

I can't seem reconcile marrying Tom someday and teaching Chinese someday.

7:57 pm - How do I reech dees keeds?
I had a rough day of it today. Class 7 is always a big problem, but today was obnoxious. Next week, I'm not teaching that class a fun lesson. It'll be write a letter to Miss Jenny about what bad things you do in class and why you do them. I'll probably take the 4 most bad behavied kids out at the beging of class and threaten them in Chinese. I'll probably have to start bringing a ruler to smack that class with too. It really sucks that they can't hold it together long enough make the class be fun. Or at least they could be quiet enough to teach the 5 kids who are interested in what I have to say.

Class 7 is my first class, then I have a break for a period and then lunch (which is a 2 hour break). The first two classes after lunch didn't go over well either. One of the math teachers had just handed class 9 a study sheet (they have midterms on thursday and friday) so they just wanted to work on the sheet, which isn't so bad, at least the kids who were paying attention could hear what I was saying. But then, it turned out that I ripped the same video twice from youtube, but gave them different names. So I was missing a video on Break Dancing and couldn't really explain what that is without it. So I finished out the lesson, but it was kinda off kilter from that point on. Class 12's sound wouldn't work, and then the computer froze so I cold booted it. They did get to see the break dancing video because the internet in their room works, but they didn't get to hear what djing sounds like or what beat boxing sounds like. Also, I had to sing the words to "Every Breath You Take" instead of playing it for an activity.

Class 3 went well. They were fairly attentive, though some worked on other things or slept. The sound worked, the internet worked, so they got to see all the videos. And, they taught me how to write Einstein in Chinese, though it took me until well after class to figure out the meaning of it.

After classes were over, I hung out in the office. The internet at home (after two weeks of blissful, continuous internet connection) was off until 6pm. I showed Grace (my Chinese buddy who is learning some English from me and teaching me some Chinese) some facebook pictures, explained why I was reading dinosaur comics, and gave her an english to chinese translation program that I have.

So there was some good today, but the overall tone was quite sour. :( Tomorrow, animals with the 6th graders and more Hip Hop exploits with grade 7. At least, because of the exams, I don't teach 7th grad after tomorrow until next Monday.

9:44 pm - Surprise!
Free Wi-fi in the hotel. I've got a lot of nature pictures of California to put on facebook! Today we hiked through the oldest redwood forest in California. Most of the trees were at least 100 feet tall. Holy moly they're massive! It was pretty cool. Then we drove up "Panoramic Highway" to a spot we could reach the top of a peak. More pictures were taken. This was where I saw a naked woman getting pictures taken in the great outdoors. Kinda weird. No. I didn't take pictures of her for my own personal stash.

Tomorrow, we haven't decided what to do yet. I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures.

8:42 pm - Leaving Soon
So, tomorrow morning I get to wake up in the early morning and get my ass to Philly International Airport and hop on a plane to San Fran. I packed all my stuff today (turns out I'm allowed two 50 pound suitcases). Now that I'm all packed, I know that those two bags plus my carry on are the only pieces of my life up till now that I get to take with me. It's scary and sad. I wish I could have filled them with the people I care about, though I don't think anyone would appreciate being stuffed in a suitcase for 18 hours.

Today was the last day for me to back out and get some of the money back that I already spent on this trip. Now, there's little doubt that I'll be taking this journey. I hope this isn't something I'll regret.

I'll be missing you all, my friends. I'll do my best to keep in touch. Love to you!

::PS. This will probably be my last journal post, and I probably won't be able to access LJ in China, so if some life changing event happens, let me know via email: jereavey@gmail.com

I think Mouse likes the taste of chocolate icecream.

I've begun going through my clothes to determine what is coming with me and what I'll still want when I get back. It's refreshing to get rid of stuff I've had for a long time that I haven't worn for a long time. It's also good to be getting rid of shirts that I've worn so many times they have a perminant funk.

I keep getting this little feeling that says "Things like this don't happen to me. Other people get to do things like this." It's like I still don't believe that I'm really going to live in China for a year, that I'm going to come back with crazy stories that rival some of the stories I hear from other people. The thought makes me wonder if the flight will get canceled, or my visa will get lost in the mail. I'm a bit nervous.

3:32 pm - Hepitius A can't kill me now!
I went to a local travel clinic to get vaccinated today. Hepitus A shot, Typhoid Pills (yeah, vaccine pills, who knew?) and prescriptions for Malaria pills and extreme diarrhea pills. :P I'm surprised that my arm doesn't hurt more than a little little bit, but the nurse who gave it to me said she's gotten many complements on her technique from people who usually faint and/or cry when being given shots. Usually, I wouldn't be able to raise my arm above my head after this kind of shot, but I've got full range. It's pretty nice.

Saw Dark Knight. Yes. It was a very good movie. Very good. However, I can't rank it as high as Iron Man. The main sticking point is that I can let my kids watch Iron Man. Dark Knight? not so much. And since my ranking of movies is based on if I can gloat to my future offspring that I saw it in the theaters, I'd have to be able to let them see it.

8:33 pm - Antfarmitar
For an early birthday present, Tom bought me an acoustic guitar! My fingers hurt, as I've been practicing with an instructional dvd. Heather (my roommie) also got a guitar. The local place has a 2 for one deal on beginner type guitars. We were learning together and have agreed to do half hour a day practices together! I'm excited. And... my fingers hurt.

12:01 pm - Visit Home
My bed at my parent's house is not big enough, and lacks The Tom. : ( Otherwise, my visit has been nice thus far. My mom didn't like that I was playing TF2, saying that it looks like "a Jerry game". :P We went to Kohls today to get something more church appropriate for me to wear to Kristen's wedding than what I wore to graduation. I'm pretty happy with the resulting ensemble. It's nice to visit the family every so often.

Living with Tom and working at Target this summer has been pretty good so far. I actually have free time to spend doing things I want, which for the most part is studying Chinese, but also video games, cooking, relaxing in the house with a cat or two or three in my lap. Unfortunately me and Tom get these melancholy moments from time to time, since we know this summer is going to end and I'll be several timezones away next year. I hope things end up okay.

10:31 pm - I has two diplomas OMG
Today I sat down in a room full of funny dressed people and one of them called my name as I walked across a stage. Later, they handed me two envelopes with papers in them that say I'm awesome and I graduated. Yay.

For the next few months, I will take those degrees and ignore them as I work at Target, making food, moving merch, and so on. Said time at Target is only for the purpose of making money to fund my expedition into China, begining August 22nd.

: ) I feel proud and happy, a little sad and nestalgic, but all around warm and fuzzy. Sleep time is now. Love to all.
